Communicating by Telephone 101

• Be prepared before you dial the number.  Decide on the purpose of your call and make a list of points you want to make.
• Do your homework.  Know the bill number, author, what issue it is concerning and the reasons for your support or opposition.  Know where the bill stands currently…in committee, up for debate, etc..
• Begin the conversation by stating  your name, your school position, the city where you live, the association you are in, position you hold (if any) and the legislative district in which you live.
• If the legislator is not available ask to speak to their aide instead.
• As briefly as possible, state the your position on the bill or issue.
• If you are speaking to the legislator's aide ask that your conversation be typed and given to the legislator.
• As always, be polite.  Be sure to thank the legislator or aide for his or her time.
• Invite the legislator to call you if any school health issues arise and offer to be a resource on school health issues.
• After the call, follow up with a letter expressing your appreciation of the time given and reinforcing your points.
